Ageisum is it an issue in the work place? - 29/07/2010

I'Im sure that we all experience ageisum in some form or another in our lives. Remember its not all about being too old, it can be the fact that you may be considered too young and in experienced. Whichever end of the scale your at there are always going to be challenges to overcome.

Remember that whilst employers are not supposed to show any bias, we do live in the real world and employers all have their individual preferences, remember employers have their own concept of team mix and philosophies. The key to ageisum from a candidates point of view is to remain positive at all times and realistic in your job expectations. Dont take these rejection to heart, work to ovecome the issues.

Please think about tailoring your CV to the job your applying for,  appeal to the employer, dont lie on you CV, you will not benefit in the long term, but do try and see yourself in the job and what qualities you can bring to the party and focus on your skils and what they can do for the vacancy.

Do be positive about your achievements, and any success stories either in the work place or in your other lifetime achievements. Employers love a positive attitude and a winner.

Our view at Vacancy Shack is that there is room for all in the market place, Vacancy Shack encourages employers to focus on the persons ability, transfereable skills, not their age. Good luck with your job hunting and if Vacancy Shack can help with your CV or career moves please feel free to contact us. Office hours 09.00 am till 4.300 pm GMT.Monday till Friday.

A Gap Year might be the answer? - 17/07/2010

Persuade the Parents That a Gap Year is a Great Idea

Mark Bottell

Whilst you may be one hundred per cent sure that a gap year is exactly what you need, you may need a little more time to persuade your parents of the same thing. It is always hard for them to let their children fly the nest, especially when that flight is likely to take them right across the globe. If you're armed with these arguments however, you may find it just that little bit easier to persuade your parents that a gap year is a great idea.

It'll Get Me Off Street Corners - Every parent fears that their kids are spending too much of their time hanging around on street corners, and many will jump at the opportunity to get them out and about and doing something productive. This gives you the perfect argument for taking a gap year as it will ensure that you swap those shopping centers with something much more exciting, and a whole lot more rewarding. Your folks will like nothing more than the idea that your days will be spent both out of trouble and out of doors enjoying everything that nature has to offer.

It'll Look Good on my C.V. - Our parents spend the early years of our lives involving us in as many activities, sports and hobbies as they can fit into the space of a week, all in the hope that we will grow up to be well-rounded and employable individuals with a C.V. to match. However, the real aim of a C.V. is to demonstrate your life experience as well as your workplace experience, and what better way to do that than to get out there and see some of the world. Many people would argue that you don't really grow up until you have travelled and stood on your own two feet. Taking a gap year is a great way of taking that first step on the road to the rest of your life. Hitting a few bumps along the way will give you something to talk about in job interviews for years to come.

It'll Help Me Learn the Value of Money - There is no disputing the fact that a gap year can cost a lot of money and this is a common concern that many parents raise when the subject is broached. However, whilst they are absolutely right in saying that that money to fund a year out must come from somewhere, they are perhaps not seeing the wood for the trees. Raising the money you need to go on a gap year not only gives you a perfect opportunity to appreciate what it is like to work full time, but also helps you to develop invaluable skills in budgeting and saving - both skills that you will appreciate later in life when your overheads suddenly shoot through the roof.

So, if your parents don't seem too psyched about the idea of you taking a gap year, try to present it to them from a slightly different perspective. Rather than seeing it as a fun way of putting off the rest of your life for a year or so, you will be able to persuade them that it is the perfect opportunity to develop skills that will be a great deal of use to you a few years down the line.

VACANCIES-Social Workers Bournemouth Council - 12/05/2010

A DESPERATE lack of social workers has prompted Bournemouth council to try and recruit staff from America.

The council has also had to resort to employing expensive agency staff and has increased the salary it pays social workers. It is also appealing to local residents to consider a career in social care.

“Since we have not always been able to fill posts, we have in the past recruited from overseas and we are about to recruit through the USA.”

Ann Graham, Bournemouth’s service director for children’s social care

Poole has a lower number of vacancies but admits it too finds recruiting suitable staff a challenge.

Twelve out of 67 posts in Bournemouth council’s children’s services are vacant, which includes those filled by agency or temporary workers.

Adult services have recently filled 11 posts, leaving four vacancies. They are particularly struggling to recruit specialist mental health workers.

In Poole, two of the 44 full-time equivalent social worker posts in children and young people’s social care are vacant. There are six vacancies in adult services.

What next in the UK job market -with a hung Parliament? - 09/05/2010

What will hppen in the recruitment world in the UK now that we have a hung Parliament. Have your say on our blog site http://www.vacancyshack.blogspot.com/.

Are you organised for your job hunting? - 19/04/2010

''Job Hunting is not just a quick scan of today’s papers, sit back, depressed at not finding your perfect job, or job to get you through the recession. Wait for the next issue of the local paper, getting depressed, worried and angry.

Like all good things in life you have to work at it, it doesn't just drop into your lap.

You need a plan of attack: - This is true whether you’re an ordinary Joe, a high flyer, old or young.

Like it or not most people are going to need to know about you and your work background or job history. Obvious really- If you go to a job agency-job fair, apply for a job in the paper, or use a high street recruitment agency they are going to ask for the same basic information. So, you need a page or two of organised Work history, your name, contact details etc., In America this is often referred to as a Resume, in the UK its normally referred to as a CV., abbreviation for a Greek word for your life history. In today business world it’s immediately thought of as your Work History. Its part of your tool kit to get a job.

The CV is your sales advert for you. It needs to structure, organised, and an honest and far reflection of your jobs and achievements. With Job title & dates of starts and finish of the jobs. We can help you with all these things for a small fee at Vacancy Shack. From £30.00 for a basic CV to a bit more for more developed /specialist CV. Remember your out to get that job.

Let's assume you have your self-promotion advert - CV. Now you are more prepared for job-hunting in earnest. You have a CV your mayor tool of the job hunter.

How do you get the next job? Well, the most powerful search tool you have is under your nose. Tell your friends your looking for work, whether ex work mates, sports buddies, friends, and relatives and contacts that you have built up over the years. Let them know what you are looking for. The word of mouth is the most powerful tool. In other words start networking. Assuming you have 10 contacts who you know and they each have 10 contacts, and so on, imagine the potential number of people, who could be keeping their eyes and ears open for you and working for you to get you back into work.

In addition of course there are organisations such as our Recruitment Agencies, they are in most town high stets and can be found in your local paper, on the internet and in literature at your local Library. Incidentally a great free place for newspapers and magazines etc., at no cost, except your time. There are dozens of agencies in Bournemouth alone, make sure you pick the one for your type of work. Whether building trade, IT, Catering, etc.,

Agencies: - Its here that your CV immediately comes to work, the agency may ask you to register by filling in their forms, although time consuming, don’t worry we have all had to do it. Remember agency cannot charge you for registration, nor in finding you a job in the UK. The agency earns its money form the company employing the agency. I say this because so many people new to job hunting (old and young) are frightened about the possibility of the cost to them. There isn’t any charge to you

So here's where your CV comes into Play. The agency may want a copy of your CV, and if they also want you to fill in their standard application forms to register then you have your prompt sheet, the CV helps to make sure you put down the information correctly, in an organised way. For more advise on job hunting- see next weeks article here at Vacancy Shack -Good luck- PS have you registered 'on line' with us and uploaded your CV? Perhaps you should? If you don’t register it's a bit like the lottery 'You have to be in it to win it'.''

Post you comments to our blog www.vacancyshack.blogspot.com/

These are typical experiences -based on 40 years in the job-hunting business. Good Luck -why not give us your thoughts on our Blog for Vacancy Shack above and 'follow us’ on our blog 'on line' also continue to follow us here at www.VacancyShack.co.uk

Gloom and Doom -or Light at the end of the tunnel? 2010 - 10/03/2010

Gloom and Doom –or Light at the end of the tunnel 2010

Focusing on the down side to a recession is counter productive, particularly when looking at the job market. Although not easy we need to be looking positively at areas of potential growth in your local area or on a broader national or international market place. Not all business is flat

I was recently talking to a customer about their business activities. Whilst he explained that the industry he was in had changed radically over the last 5 years, consolidation in the market place, reduced number of players, etc., His particular business sector was busier than ever.

Why was this?

Shrewd management, quality staff, good products / services, and a strong national / international presence were the main contributors.

No doubt all of these played a very critical part in their current healthy situation. The industry whilst shrinking from 80 plus in the UK into a hand full of main players in their sector, was healthy and ahead of the game in terms of innovation and customer service and care. Whilst other business sectors were simply surviving their industry was working flat out to satisfy demand. The suggestion was that new staff would be needed very soon to take on the demands, as the existing staff is stretched to the limit with excessive overtime.

Now this is good news for job hunters. Once this situation has developed the opportunities start presenting themselves. Keep your ears to the ground and eyes open for these types of companies. As part of your job-hunting campaign why not register with us today with an up to date CV for any opportunities that we hear of and Good luck. Article from www.vacancyshack.co.uk

Travel As a Job - 01/02/2010

Travel As a Job

T Hale

Having a job is an essential part of life. It gives you purpose and most importantly, a means of income. Just imagine what it would be like if you had lots of money to spare or a steady source of income without lifting a finger, would you continue to work and stress yourself out with the mundane day to day activities? Most probably not.

Traveling on vacation is one of the ultimate life aspirations of many people around the world. Unfortunately, it can be quite expensive and people feel like they have to work hard to save money to achieve the ability to travel. However, that is not the only way to travel and explore the world. There is a better way and it is composed of two words... travel jobs.

Travel jobs will satisfy your thirst for exploration but can still help you earn steady cash and you don't have to wait until you retire in your old age tp frolic in the sands of the Caribbean or experience the magnificent culture of Asia. You can do it now without burning holes to your pockets.

Sounds incredible but travel jobs have been around for a very long time, ever since the dawn of tourism. The travel and tourism industry has been booming and has even been able to weather the storm of global economic crisis. Tourism is a giant industry because many nations rely on their income from tourism and travel. Recession or not, the tourism industry has survived and continues to grow.

The advancements in communications and transportation technology have greatly contributed to the growth of the travel and tourism industry. Traveling had never been easier nor faster. And the world has become figuratively smaller because we are now able to communicate and connect with one another much more easily.

Travelers and vacationers are steadily increasing. As a result, the demand for travel and tourism workers is also mounting. Jobs such as flight attendants, travel agents, and cabin crews are constantly offered these days. Hospitality workers like the staff in hotels; for example concierges, bellhops, chambermaids, and even managerial positions are becoming more common.

Why Would You Need A Professional Writer? - 20/11/2009

Why Would You Need A Professional Writer?

Do you run a business? Large or small , this is one of those cases where size really doesn’t matter. If you do then you won’t need anybody to tell you that in this age of instant everything you really do need to have a website where potential customers can find out a bit about what you do and how brilliantly you do it.

Your website is your shop window, especially if you don’t actually trade through a conventional shop. So you look into setting up your own website and find there’s more to it than you thought and it’s far too time consuming to do it yourself.

Once you find yourself a professional website designer to design and set up your site for you think you’re home and dry. Then the creator of your website says, ”OK, once you let me have some content to put on there your site can go live.”

That’s when you probably start to panic a bit! You are only too aware that stringing words together effectively is not your thing. Perhaps you also have to admit that your spelling and punctuation is atrocious!

Your beautiful new website is going be ruined by badly written content and your highly skilled and professional business is going to look like a real cowboy outfit! That’s the impression people get from bad spelling and punctuation. It looks sloppy and it is avoidable.

By using a professional writer you’ll get words which make people want to read them and hold their interest once they start so that they feel the need to contact you to find out more. Not only that, because it’s well written in good, clear English it will do wonders for your company’s image.

Your writer will know how to present your services or products in plain, non-technical language that normal people will understand. There’s nothing that turns most people off than text riddled with jargon.

You can have all this at a very modest cost that should be more than covered by the increased business generated. Just go to

www.write4you.org.uk to find out about website content and much more besides.

About NHS Jobs - 25/10/2009

About NHS Jobs

NHS Jobs is the dedicated online recruitment service for the NHS. Every NHS trust in England and Wales advertises job opportunities with NHS Jobs, resulting in around 20,000 opportunities available every month.

NHS Jobs is the UK's leading online recruitment service. It attracts over 6 million web visits and receives applications from more than 250,000 jobseekers every month. The service provides job seekers with access to vacancies across the NHS through a single portal, and provides employers with the tools and features they need to manage their recruitment processes effectively. For more information for jobseekers, including how to get the best from NHS Jobs, visit our 'Advice for jobseekers' section.

NHS Jobs has saved the NHS over £240 million since it was launched in 2003. The biggest savings have been made through reductions in recruitment advertising spend as trusts have reduced their reliance on traditional advertising channels; and through decreased administration costs as the use of online applications has grown. NHS Jobs also shares vacancy information directly with Jobcentre Plus, helping the NHS support employment in their local communities.

NHS Jobs is provided by NHS Employers and delivered under contract by Methods Consulting and Jobsite UK. NHS Employers represents trusts in England on workforce issues and helps employers to ensure the NHS is a place where people want to work. The NHS workforce is at the heart of quality patient care. NHS employers work with trusts to reflect their views and act on their behalf in four priority areas:

  • Pay and negotiations
  • Recruitment and planning the workforce
  • Health and productive workplaces
  • Employment policy and practice.

What is Interim Managment - 18/10/2009

If you have experience at a senior level and enjoy the challenge of working on new tasks in new locations, interim management could be just what you’re looking for. Just be prepared to hit the ground running, says Rachel Youngman, an interim manager and chair of InterimWomen.com.

Rachel Youngman - InterimWomen.com

Rachel Youngman, Chair of InterimWomen.com

What is interim management?

It’s where an organisation uses people who have senior experience, often at board level, for a particular need it has and for a specific period of time, often between three months and a year. This could be where there is a gap in skills, where expertise is needed for a particular project or where there is a crisis and something unexpected has happened.

How did you become an interim manager?

I had been employed for 20 years earning a great deal of project management experience and decided to go self-employed. I wanted to work in the charity sector, so I built up my contacts by volunteering. I then began the process to find out what options I had and came across interim management. I began doing a mix of consultancy and interim work.

Is interim management quite similar to consultancy work, then?

The difference is that consultancy is more of an advisory role, while interim management is more active – you have to roll your sleeves up and get on with the job straight away. This is Extracted from an 'on line' artical from JobSight.

Welcome to 2009 - a year of change and new opportunities - 13/01/2009

2009 may be starting with a cloud over your head, but don't give up. 2009 may be your chance to review your lifestyle,  ambitions, and personal goals and make changes for the better. It may be forced on you by economics outside of your personal control. Faced with an unshore future you may need to review your goals and adjust your short term plans to simply survive the economic down turn in your paticular profession or trade.

Now may be the time to go back to school and learn new skills, not an option for lots of us, for most of us its likely we have commitments and we will need an income to keep us going and put bread on the table.

If you havent done it already its time to review your personal abilities.

Its a time to review your skills and abilites which are unique to you personally. Most of these skills can be transfered between jobs - they become your unique selling points USP's. in the same way that marketing people look at the USP's of a new product. After all once you are looking for new employment you are in selling mode, you are now a salesman and the product is you!!.

Sit down with a friend or relative or if your shy, simply list things you consider yourself good at :- discuss with friends or work mates if possible they may see your abilities you had not realised and produce say 10 good qualities / skills you have. Whether its being able to talk easily to groups of people to being quick at maths, list these person skills.

You will be surprised at just how much you have to offer potential employers across a wide range of jobs, that you may never have thought o before. Good luck with this exercise and make it work for you in the job market.  It worked for me. Let us know how its worked for you in the hunt for a new job at enquiry@vacancyshack.co.uk

Crossrail 'to create 14,000 construction jobs' - 31/08/2008
Crossrail 'to create 14,000 construction jobs' Problems in the housing market led to a number of construction job losses at the end of June and beginning of July, which meant the creation of 14,000 vacancies in London towards the end of the month was welcomed. These roles will be filled from 2010 when the Crossrail project gets underway. Meanwhile, plans for a new eco-development in Blackpool were submitted to the local council, potentially creating 200 construction jobs. Work on a new campus at the University of York is also expected to create new construction positions. This extract from The Career Engineer

Choosing the Right Graduate Job For You by John Bult - 11/08/2008
0 votes voteWhat happens if you are offered more than one of the jobs that you applied for? Which one should you choose. When you're fresh out of University with your new Graduate status, it's common to apply for as many jobs as possible. Some people will apply for a lot at one time, with the logic that they will be likely to be offered at least one of the positions. You may be lucky and find yourself in this position, being offered the graduate job you really wanted is a great feeling after all. But what happens if you are offered more than one of the jobs that you applied for? Which one should you choose? This is always going to be down to your personal preference. Some people will always accept the job that offers the most reward in terms of pay. It's true that we all find work to earn money, so it's a good logic to have. However, the amount of salary offered by a position should not always be the only deciding factor. Along with the quoted salary, you could also consider what additional benefits are also available to you should you accept the offer. These benefits may vary greatly depending on the industry you are entering and the position you are being offered. However, some of these benefits could be fairly standard such as a pension plan or healthcare plans. These could make an impact on your life later on and could be worth considering if you think you are likely to stay with the company for a while. If you like the job offer, it would be a good idea to sit back and consider exactly who has offered it to you. For example what do you know about the company? Are they established and are they financially secure? Some companies may have a proven track record of assisting graduates and newcomers progress their careers. Along with the company itself, take a look at what the personal benefits available to you are. Personal benefits tend to cover the details such as how much paid holiday you are entitled to every year and any sick pay. You should also know if you are expected to work on bank holidays and the amount of hours per week. So with these factors in mind, take the time to carefully review any of the job offers that you receive. You may find that the offer that didn't look very appealing to begin with is in fact a much more viable offer in the long run. Typical questions at interview… and their answers - 29/02/2008
Typical questions at interview… and their answers Interviews and the questions you might be asked vary a great deal. There are some classic interview questions that can trip you up, if you're not prepared. You should know about the company, know about yourself and have a good idea of the job's demands, before attending an interview. One of the things an interviewer might ask is, tell them a little bit about yourself and your current job. Aim to describe the kind of person you are and your job, in a couple of minutes at the most. Be positive about your qualities, tailoring them to the key responsibilities of the job you are applying for.

CV Content and Style - 28/02/2008
CV Content & Style The style in which you should write a CV based on your goals and experience, as well as essential content to include. The essential aim of the CV should be to present a well-rounded and balanced view of you as a person. It should contain the following information: Name Address Current Occupation Telephone Number Date of Birth Driving License Details Secondary and Higher Education: where studied and qualifications Professional Qualifications Employment History Other info: interests, volunteering, achievements. A CV is a relatively flexible document and you may want to change the order in which information is presented to suit certain prospective employers. For example, where your employment experience is particularly relevant to the position then you may want to put that information first and vice versa if it is your education that may catch their eye. There are three main ways of styling a CV's content: Targeted, Functional and Chronological.
